Title: Labor and Delivery Registered Nurse
This position will be scheduled in the Labor and Delivery unit on 9 West at The Christ Hospital Health Network main campus located at 2139 Auburn Avenue, Cincinnati, Ohio 45219. Unit Description: The Christ Hospital Labor and Delivery unit has approximately 3100 deliveries and 2100 ambulatory patients per year. Labor and Delivery is a 29 bed unit which delivers care to a complex range of patients varying in age from newborn infants to teens, young adults and adults. Within the unit, there are 12 labor and delivery beds, 4 high-risk beds, 6 post-op recovery beds, 3 surgical suites and a 4 bed Triage unit. Patients are triaged, admitted, stabilized, delivered or transferred to a level III facility as appropriate. When patients are admitted to L&D, routine care may include, but is not limited to: an admission assessment, continuous or intermittent fetal surveillance, and referrals to support services, induction/augmentation and pain management. The patient’s plan is developed at the time of admission and then modified anytime her comfort level changes during labor, delivery, and recovery. RN’s utilize the pain scale and document location and characteristics along with their interventions/plan of care and the patient’s response to the interventions. Nursing provides many diverse comfort measure for labor support such as the use of rocking chairs, birthing balls, water therapy and ambulation with telemetry. Analgesics are administered as directed by the physician including continuous epidural anesthesia/analgesia. Anesthesia coverage is available 24/7. To enhance couplet care, SCN nurses/NNPs attend all deliveries, complete initial assessments, and promote skin to skin appropriately. The SCN RN assesses the newborns at the mothers’ bedside in L&D at approximately 1 hour of life for physical and gestational assessments and complete procedures such as eye prophylaxis, injections, and thermo stabilization. The couplet is then transferred to the postpartum unit. Job Overview:The practice of nursing requires specialized knowledge, judgment, and skills to provide care to groups and individuals. The RN utilizes knowledge derived from the principles of biological, physical, behavioral, social, and nursing sciences to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care. All care is provided based on the concepts inherent in the model of care for TCH which promotes an on-going partnership between patients and families and the team of healthcare providers. The care is culturally based and age specific. The RN adheres to American Nursing Association (ANA) code of ethics and to the scope of practice described in the Ohio Nurse Practice Act. Education:Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. BSN is required within five years of hire. Experience: Labor and Delivery RN experience preferred. Licensure and Certifications:

  • The RN holds a current licensure to practice nursing in Ohio.

  • Membership in professional organizations is desirable.

  • BLS certification is required prior to patient contact. NRP required. NRP certification course offered upon hire.

  • Fetal monitoring certification is required within 1 year or when eligible based on years of experience.

  • Certification in area of clinical specialty is expected within five years of eligibility.

  • +
