Position Overview

As a Senior Accountant, Corporate Accounting (Derivatives), you will be responsible for monitoring, accounting, reporting and analysis of business activity related to derivatives and financial instruments at Invenergy. You will work with various groups within the Commercial Execution and Finance organizations on financial accounting close related inquires and ad-hoc projects. You will support the preparation of quarterly and annual financial statement schedules, annual compilation of footnotes, miscellaneous financial reporting requests, and annual audits. Successful candidates will be familiar with related accounting guidance including ASC 815 Derivatives and Hedging.

Responsibilities

  • Accounting and reporting the accounting activity related to the company’s financial instruments (interest rate swap contracts, commodity hedges, etc.)

  • Prepare project workbooks to support balance sheet and income statement balances and activity.

  • Prepare and review financial statements, including all monthly journal entries, to verify account balances for accuracy and reasonableness.

  • Assist with annual audit work papers and audit report preparation.

  • Perform tests to evaluate eligibility for effective hedge treatment.

  • Perform discontinued hedge accounting and maintenance of amortization schedules

  • Completion of close procedures including accounting data reconciliation between general ledger, derivatives sub-system, data warehouse and core data sets.

  • Participate in the evaluation and implementation of derivative accounting and reporting standards, including the development or refinement of current practices, policies and procedures.

  • Monitor and evaluate the impact of proposed accounting standard changes and assist in the interpretation and implementation of accounting policies.

  • Drive technology and automation efforts as they apply to derivative accounting processes and financial reporting.

  • Participate in special projects and other technical accounting matters as they arise.

  • Assist Accounting Manager and Director in developing process improvements and greater efficiency within the department.

  • Prepare special reports by collecting, analyzing and summarizing information and trends.

Required Skills

  • Bachelors Degree in Accounting.

  • 4-6 years of experience in accounting or finance.

  • Multi-Site Organization SEC Company or Public accounting firm experience preferred.

  • Existing understanding and knowledge of GAAP is required.

  • Ability to adhere to monthly, quarterly and annual department driven deadlines.

  • Ability to multi-task and manage shifting priorities and deadlines, with attention to detail and an ability to work both independently and in a team environment

  • Familiarity with Excel and other Microsoft Office products.

  • Strong coordination / organization skills with attentiveness to timelines.

  • Strong interpersonal skills – able to work effectively in a team environment.

  • Responsible, dependable and possess an exceptional work ethic.

Preferred Skills

  • CPA strongly preferred

  • 1-2 years of experience working with ASC 815 and ASC820

  • Experience in energy industry preferred, but not required.
