American Water Utility Laborer in Camden, New Jersey

- Primary Role*
Under direction of supervisor performs a variety of tasks related to water metering, valve operation, utility markouts and water distribution work. Assists distribution staff with customer service, hydrant repairs, hydrant flushing and main break emergencies and repairs. Performance of all duties must adhere and comply with company safety policies, guidelines and procedures.
Operates distribution system valves. Assist in the repair of distribution system valves and fire hydrants. Paints hydrants. Perform hydrant flushing. 50%
Assists distribution staff in marking locations of underground water mains, distributions lines, service lines, valves, etc. 20%
Assists distribution staff with meter installations. Performs customer service functions such as obtaining final meter readings and re-reads as per service order. 15%
Digs, fills, and tamps earth excavations; levels ground using pick, shovel, tamper and rake. Manual digging of valve boxes and curb boxes using shovel and digging bar. Shovels concrete and snow; cleans culverts and ditches; cuts tree and brush; operates power lawnmowers. 10%
Performs other duties as assigned. 5%
Follows Company Environmental, Health and Safety Policies, and reports unsafe conditions to supervision immediately. 100%
Knowledge of techniques, equipment, facilities, materials, methods, and procedures used in operations, maintenance, construction, and mechanical repair of water facilities and appurtenances.
Knowledge of health and safety regulations.
Able to read gauges and meters.
Able to prepare and maintain accurate paperwork such as records, logs, orders, surveys and routine reports as directed.
Able to communicate effectively will all levels of the organization.
Able to use of power tools such as saws, compressors, sanders, grinders, etc. as required.
Able to use of common hand tools.
Able to establish effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, customers and the general public.
Able to work in a team environment.
Able to plan, schedule, prioritize, and coordinate work within assigned work area.
Ability to respond to emergencies.
One (1) or more years related work experience in the water distribution field.
Must possess a high school diploma or GED.
