Transdev Safety and Training Program Manager - Autonomous Vehicles (Mountain View, CA) in California


The Safety & Training Manager leads, manages, and develops the Safety & Training programs associated with the respective work site; which includes the overall support and guidance to the local autonomous vehicle facility. The Manager coordinates with the Director of Safety & Training as well as local shift supervisors. GM's and our client in crafting short-and longer-term strategies in building a culture of safety within the Transdev Autonomous Vehicle Division.

The Safety & Training Manager introduces and oversees systems and activities to maintain oversight of regulatory compliance status; provides training and professional development for local management, training instructors and autonomous vehicle operators. Coordinates and manages collision/incident reporting process; conducts audits and inspections of the safety management process and training program; monitors metrics and KPIs reflecting performance.



  • Ensure compliance with company, state and federal regulations regarding transportation and workplace safety;

  • Monitor driver/operator qualification file and safety record;

  • Ensure drug/alcohol program compliance with client contract/DOT regulations;

  • Oversees location randomized drug testing program in partnership with Safety Director and testing vendors;

  • Responsible for maintenance and organization of all drug testing records related to random; post-collision and reasonable suspicion for managed work site;

  • Responsible for training new shift managers on drug testing protocols;

  • Oversees and implements the elements of the collision/incident process including coordination of reporting, investigation, documentation and follow-up;

  • Periodically reviews and audits incident file contents for accuracy and documents needed;

  • Performs collision investigation training for local shift supervisor;

  • Ensures our DOT operating centers are within FMCSA compliance from a company policy and safety standpoint;

  • Capable of responding quickly to changing and potentially high-pressure environments - being on call for vehicle collisions and major incidents;

  • Manages the Site Safety Groups;

  • Works with local shift supervisrs who run DOT regulated facilities to ensure compliance within policy and client contract.


  • Leads training and safety awareness initiatives focused on collision prevention and best practices;

  • Assure proper accountability is delivered for preventable incidents;

  • Develop materials and conduct ongoing training for vehicle operations related to safety program & policies;

  • Manage a team of instructors, including performance evaluations;

  • Responsible for the execution, quality, delivery, and oversight of new operator training in partnership with Sr. Vehicle Instructors;

  • Works with client counterpart in training programs to align on goals, initiatives, updates, and training targets;

  • Collaborates with client adult learning team to assist in the development of e-learning modules as part of ongoing vehicle operator training;

  • Organizes and meets with training instructor team weekly to align on goals and track trainees' progress;

  • Provide concise, clear, and accurate verbal and written feedback regarding all aspects of the operation;

  • Other duties as required.


Education, Licensing, and Certifications Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Business Administration, Logistics, Transportation, or related field preferred.

  • Must possess a valid Driver’s License and be able to obtain an Automated Vehicle Tester permit (if working out of California).

Experience, Skills, and Knowledge Required:

  • Minimum of 4 years’ experience in related field work.

  • Must have general knowledge of training techniques and safe work practices

  • Must have the ability to prioritize, be detail oriented, and use good judgment.

  • Must possess excellent organizational and communications skills (verbal and written).

  • Must be proficient with computer applications (Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc).

  • Must be able to handle crisis situations well.

  • Must be able to take a leadership role in solving problems.

  • Must have the ability to objectively investigate reports concerning automated vehicle related problems and determine needs for training.

Pre-Employment Requirements:

  • Must be able to pass an employment physical examination (pre-employment) and substance abuse.

  • Must be willing to participate in a quarterly criminal background check program which will require written consent for ongoing background check.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to work shifts or flexible work schedules as needed.

  • Regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to manipulate, handle or feel; reach with hands or arms; and talk or hear. Frequently required to sit. Occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel crouch or crawl; and smell. Occasionally required to lift up to 25 pounds.

  • 50% of the workday could be spent outdoors monitoring service on routes, and company locations. Must be able to work in extreme heat and cold and in a damp environment with moderate noise.

  • Remaining work is accomplished in an office or in a cubicle space equipped with a telephone and computer; time is spent sitting, typing, or looking at a computer.
