State of Massachusetts Trades Worker in Bridgewater, Massachusetts
The Department of Fire Services (DFS) currently seeks to fill the new position of Trades Worker at our Bridgewater campus. Our Bridgewater campus opened in 2019 and is a former Department of Corrections 18 acre complex, with multiple buildings, which will undergo extensive renovations over the next 3-5 years to transition the facility into a Southeastern Massachusetts firefighter training facility and technical rescue training facility.
This position performs a variety of duties to assist in building and property maintenance including carpentry, plumbing, electrical, HVAC and other trades work. The successful candidate will perform routine maintenance and repair and will assist trades workers in the performance of their duties; will maintain machinery, equipment and tools; and will perform skilled manual labor and related work as required.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Engages in the upkeep, maintenance, and repair of grounds, training props, buildings and related structures including utility systems, security and alarm systems, lighting, drainage systems, fencing, and parking lots.
Inspects grounds, buildings, related structures and/or building utility systems to determine upkeep needs. Recommends repairs or replacement of parts; notes hazardous conditions; and establishes work priorities based on safety requirement and the operational needs of the facility.
Determines the needs for supplies, materials and needed equipment required to perform assigned work. Performs preventative maintenance of all building and grounds related equipment as required by manufacturer recommendations and warranties.
Performs preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and tools by washing, inspecting, tightening, lubricating and sharpening edges on all cutting tools.
Performs various manual labor tasks that may require some specialized skills to assist in the work of outside trade workers and craft people such as carpenters, plumbers, masonry, welding, brazing, and soldering
Performs various manual labor tasks to assist in the work of contractors such as shoveling, snow blowing, spreading salt and sand on pedestrian walkways, roadways and parking lots, moving furniture, pruning and planting, mowing lawns, raking, and digging.
Operates light and heavy equipment and hand tools.
May be required to work out doors in all types of weather.
Loads and unloads trucks, physically or by the use of equipment.
Participates in the process of ordering needed equipment and supplies.
Any other duties as requested by the Facility Manager.

Minimum Entrance Requirements: None.
Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class B Motor Vehicle Operator's License.
Possession of a current and valid Hoisting Engineer's 2A License.
Knowledge of the use and operation of hand held power tools such as drills, etc.
Knowledge of the types and uses of small hand tools such as pliers, chisels, hammers, etc.
Knowledge of the methods used in the care and maintenance of small and hand held power tools.
Skill in using small hand tools such as pliers, hammers, screwdrivers, wrenches, etc.
Skill in using hand held power tools.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with others.
Ability to deal tactfully with others.
Ability to maintain a clam manner in emergency situations.
Ability to work in a team setting.
Ability to lift and carry heavy objects.
