The new Ombuds Office has been created to further this commitment by providing a confidential engagement process through which all staff at any level—employees, providers, researchers and trainees— can receive unbiased guidance and support. The inaugural role will include developing the office in collaboration with leaders across the enterprise and will require both vision and passion for the work.
This Ombuds Office Director will be responsible for:
Directing the Ombuds Office for Boston Children’s which serves as an independent office providing assistance to manage conflict, resolve disputes and enhance communication.
Providing confidential, impartial and informal place to discuss concerns, identify goals and consider all options in managing or resolving concerns
Providing coaching in written and verbal communications, shuttle diplomacy, and information about policies/procedures and resources
Preparing annual report based on anonymous aggregate data that discusses trends in the reporting of issues or concerns and identifies patterns or problem areas in existing policies and practices
Supporting and managing the Office and fulfilling the Ombuds function in a manner consistent with the Charter for the Office and the International Ombudsman Association’s Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics
Reports to the EVP Health Affairs and SVP Chief Culture/Administrative Officer
To qualify, you must have:
Master's Degree in a related field such as (but not limited to) social work, psychology, behavioral health or legal studies
Minimum 10 years demonstrated experience in conflict resolution, mediation and/or negotiation or a closely related field. Experience and organizational knowledge of academic medical centers is preferred. Previous Ombuds experience preferred
Certification in mediation, and/or completed IOA Ombudsman Training 101, 202. IOA Practice course preferred (required after hire)
Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills including the ability to work well with individuals at all institutional levels
Ability to quickly develop a rapport with others and experience working with subtle and/or complex institutional political dynamics
Excellent problem-solving skills
Demonstrated ability handling highly confidential matters with discretion and ability to maintain a professional demeanor
Expert ability to work with all aspects of diversity and equity with sensitivity, companion and respect
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
