Department Overview:

The Proofpoint Legal Department is dedicated to providing expert legal advice in a fast-paced business environment and supporting Proofpoint’s crucial mission of enabling organizations across the world to protect their most valuable assets, their people and their data, with our people-centric cybersecurity products and services. This position will be part of the Technology and Products Group in the Legal Department, working closely with Proofpoint’s Associate General Counsel, Product. The Product Counsel role is an important part of building the culture and success of the legal function to help drive Proofpoint’s growth.

Role Overview:

The Product Counsel will join a collaborative legal team and will work with cross-functional teams, peers, and staff to advance business objectives. The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting Proofpoint’s innovators and go to market teams for product launch, interacting with company leaders, and making agile decisions on a wide variety of compliance and strategy initiatives. The role would be ideally based out of Proofpoint’s office in either Boston, Massachusetts, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; or Sunnyvale, California.

Your day-to-day

  • Working with finance, sales operations, product management, product marketing, engineering, network operations, global information security, and other groups, you will provide excellent legal advice, support and training for the product launch process of a SaaS company (including privacy by design, data inventory and flow mapping, export compliance, open source clearance, and product specific contract terms and contract vehicles). (50%)

  • You will respond to requests for advice on a variety of legal and regulatory topics and then assist your internal business clients with how relevant laws and regulations affect their business initiatives. (20%)

  • You will provide legal analyses of new laws, regulations and industry guidance that impact product development, operations and commercial agreements, and assist in the design and implementation of appropriate policies to ensure compliance, including with respect to data protection and privacy. (15%)

  • You will proactively communicate issues back to management and drive good business, legal and operational processes throughout the organization, and draft and implement related policies (10%)

  • Some travel as requested, post COVID19 (5%)

What you bring to the team

The successful candidate will be a highly collaborative, strategic and quick-witted individual with meaningful experience in the following areas:

  • Experience with data security and privacy issues required, at a minimum either GDPR or CCPA

  • SaaS product and licensing experience strongly preferred

  • Experience with open source licensing and clearance, export compliance, product and channel partner compliance preferred

  • Excellent project managements and negotiation skills, including “soft” skills to encourage, motivate and influence at all levels of the organization and of our customers and partners

  • Strong writing and drafting skills with keen attention to detail

  • Effective communication in person, in groups, over video and teleconference. over email and in more formal documentation

  • A practical, creative and proactive problem-solver who is confident and calm under fire and a strong team player

  • Highest degree of personal and professional integrity and ethics

  • 7 + years’ experience as an attorney, with previous in-house experience preferred

  • Member in good standing of a state bar in the United States; California, Massachusetts or Pennsylvania preferred
