We are currently seeking a Biologist with the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD.

This is a long-term contract position which offers:

TASKS. The contractor shall:

  • Maintain laboratory and cell culture work area, including safe handling and proper disposal of biohazardous and chemical waste per NIH policies and guidelines.

  • Maintain an organized and clean work environment; ensure that reagents are properly labeled.

  • Receive and catalog tissue and blood samples from NIH clinical trials.

  • Culture tumor infiltrating lymphocytes from tumor biopsies.

  • Collect tissue from outside hospitals for transport to the NIH laboratory; this includes but is not limited to Suburban Hospital, George Washington Hospital, Johns Hopkins Hospital, University of Maryland Hospital. This transport may involve the use of a government vehicle.

  • Isolate and culture peripheral blood B cells and dendritic cells from patients on NIH clinical trials.

  • Work with staff on the modification of laboratory protocols and experiments based on literature findings.

  • Assist senior laboratory scientists with flow cytometry, immunofluorescence, and immune co-culture experiments.

  • Perform tissue and cell culture; use sterile technique.

  • Perform a variety of specialized tissue fixation, embedding, sectioning and staining techniques (bone decalcification and sectioning, frozen tissue sectioning and serial sectioning) to demonstrate a variety of tissue components or materials present in tissues, as required.

  • Maintain records of all experiments in laboratory notebook, including planning, execution, outcome, and evaluation of experiments performed.

  • Maintain proper techniques for the safe handling and disposal of reagents/chemicals.

  • Prepare analyses, reports and summaries for publication and presentation; participate in laboratory meetings.

  • Prepare presentations for NIH, regional, and national meetings.

  • Operate, maintain and troubleshoot laboratory equipment, including freezers, incubators, and centrifuges; and arrange for instrument service and repair as needed.

  • Provide occasional administrative lab support if necessary, including maintenance of stock solutions, and ordering and stocking of lab supplies, laboratory liquid nitrogen and carbon dioxide.

REQUIREMENTS. The contractor must have:

  • Master’s degree in Biology, Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Life Sciences or a related discipline. Three (3) years of specialized experience plus a BA/BS degree is equivalent to a Master’s degree.

  • Minimum of one (1) years of experience in a research laboratory.

  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written.

  • Ability to maintain accurate and detailed laboratory records.

  • Excellent analytical, organizational and time management skills.
