Job Description

Salesforce is looking for Lead/Principal Applied Researchers (NLP/Conversational AI) with strong publication track record and/or experience in productizing cutting-edge NLP/Conversational AI research. You will work on cutting-edge AI research and build products used by millions of people every day.

A typical day for you might include the following:

Develop deep learning models in TensorFlow / PyTorch to solve major problems Salesforce’s hundreds of thousands enterprise customers have

Participate in all aspects of cutting-edge research in NLP and Conversational AI, publishing new findings and methods to advance the field of study

Partner end-to-end with Product Managers, Architects, Data Scientists, Software Engineers, and UX Researchers to understand customer requirements, design prototypes, and bring innovative technologies to production

Lead the design and implementation of next-generation Conversational AI prototypes

Work with various Salesforce product teams to ingest their data and sprinkle machine learning fairy dust on their products

Participating in meal conversations (when we go back to our beautiful office, or virtually) with your team members about really important topics, such as: Should the cuteness of panda bears be a factor in their survivability? Is love a decision tree or a regression model? How far ahead would society be today if we had 12 fingers instead of 10? How can we take vacations for free?

What we care about:

Strong academic record, PhD in a quantitative field (e.g., CS, EE, Operations Research, ME, Industrial Engineering, etc.) preferred, or equivalent experience in Research and Development.

Professional industry experience is important; especially in creating real products based on data and AI. You need to be an expert in coding and software architecture.

You have strong Deep Learning experience, especially its application in NLP and/or Conversational AI tasks.

We have scale. You need to have experience in distributed and scalable systems. Tradeoffs around model accuracy, latency, throughput, cost of serving, etc. are made here. You’ve tinkered with modern data storage, messaging, and processing frameworks (e.g., Kafka, Spark , Hadoop, Cassandra, etc.). You know how to put modern data / ML pipelines together using these frameworks at your disposal.

You need to be a technical leader. We’re a growing, diverse team and we work together on projects in collaboration with a wide range of cross-functional teams within Salesforce. We love to collaborate and help each other, and we want someone to share that ideology. As a senior member of the team, you are expected to lead technical discussions in front of a diverse audience to drive consensus and progress and provide mentorship and thought leadership for the rest of the team.

You have to be a very quick learner - we face new challenges every day, anything that ranges between the operating model of a financial services companies, conversation model for chatbots, multilingual and multimodal Deep Learning, to how to the design of the long term roadmap for AI R&D and system architecture for a new product line. No school could prepare you for all of these, so you need to be hungry for new knowledge and good at applying your new learnings to your work.

You should be a self-starter who can see the big picture, and prioritize your work to make the largest impact on the business’ and customer’s vision and requirements.

Preferred Skills:

We’re looking for experienced candidates (5+ years of professional experience in Software or Machine Learning Engineering or Research after PhD)

3+ years in ML / DL settings

We dockerize applications and services. You should know how to build, test, and deploy code to run on cloud infrastructure.

Familiar with Deep Learning and its application in NLP

Fluency in Tensorflow or PyTorch
