J&J Family of Companies Senior Legal Counsel in Beijing, China

Job Description

This is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic global legal organisation of a leading global healthcare organisation. The position calls for a senior legal practitioner able to provide legal counsel across a broad range of commercial issues for a pharmaceutical business with particular focus on cyber security, data security, privacy, labor dispute and employee relationship management.

The ideal candidate should be hands-on, team-oriented, solution-focused and a quick and agile learner who is willing to assume accountability for complex legal issues and drive for results in a matrix organisation.

Key Accountabilities

Provide legal counsel, strategic guidance and support to the Janssen Pharmaceuticals business units and enabling functions as directed by the XJP Legal Lead of Business Operations Group in order to positively influence management to make well considered decisions and achieve compliant growth including the following:

  • Partner and work with other Johnson & Johnson (“J&J”) lawyers and business colleagues regionally and globally to drive alignment and share best practices.

  • Provide the various businesses and enabling functions with sound legal advice and ethical guidance taking note in particular: Johnson & Johnson’s “Our Credo”, Code of Business Conduct and J&J’s Health Care Business Integrity Guide.

  • Pro-actively set up new policies or make required changes to existing policies, creating appropriate training for management and employees due to legislative changes.

  • Provide legal counsel and compliance guidance on cyber security, privacy, data security and other types of technology-related business-enabling solutions;

  • Lead or contribute to management of labor disputes and litigations, provide legal support to Employee Relationship management, Talent Acquisition, company organization change and other types of HR related matters of XJP;

  • Closely work with XJP Legal Lead of Business Operations Group to lead or contribute to the handling of government investigations and inquiries;

  • Engage and manage outside counsel including providing appropriate budgets for outside counsel and ground rules for the business on when and how to request outside legal services/support.

    Other activities as directed by the XJP Legal Lead of Business Operations Group

  • Assist in internal investigations

  • Manage product liability dispute and litigation.


Key Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctorate, LLB or equivalent law degree from a reputable law school in China and a graduate degree from an internationally recognized university outside of China would be a plus

  • Licen c e to practice law in China; additional licence in another jurisdiction will be an advantage.

  • F luen cy in written and spoken English and fluent in written and spoken Mandarin .

  • At le ast 6-8 ye ars of relevant legal experience since qualification – ideally trained by a multinational law firm overseas and work experience outside China in a G20 country.

  • E xperience working in multinational corporations , ideally with significant experience doing legal work in pharmaceuticals (ideally) or other life science industr ies .

  • B road - based commercial and corporate experience in both developed and developing markets .

  • MNC and Cross-border environment - work effectively in a multi-national company and cross - border environment .

  • Communication - ability to counsel senior management on complex legal matters; able to reduce message to material issues without over-simplifying or having material omission.

  • Teamwork - comfortable working as part of a team and keen to interact with a diverse group of people spanning a broad range of business teams and executives within our client organizations.

  • Influential – able to advance ideas and influence others .

  • Conflict Management - manage conflicts in an open and constructive manner .

  • Integrity and Moral Courage - set an example and ensure high ethical, legal and compliance standards at XJP and be proactive in engaging organisation to identify opportunities to enhance ethics and anti-corruption practices and procedures.

  • Time Management – able to juggle competing demands on time and attention and meeting challenging timelines
