Assistant Director of Public WorksThe Assistant Director of Public Works performs complex, technical and administrative work supervising the daily operations of Public Works and related facilities. They must perform such duties as scheduling jobs for various crews, ordering material for inventory, meet with contractors and supervise the work of Public Works employees. They must follow safety procedures and instructions accordingly.Work ActivitiesSupervisioniEnsure that work crews complete work ordersMonitor the work crew to ensure safe operation of all equipmentPlan and organize the work of maintenance crewsSupervise the construction, installation, repair and maintenance of Town owned facilities and infrastructureKeep time and work records for employees under supervisionDecision MakingPrepare division budget and monitor expendituresOrder material for inventory to ensure adequate amount of parts, materials and suppliesSchedule jobs for crewsHire new employeesTerminate unproductive and hazardous current employeesEvaluate the performance of employees under supervisionManage simple and difficult customer requestsInterpersonal ComplexityInvestigate customer complaints and take appropriate actionGive feedback to employees under supervisionConduct safety meetingsJob ContextThe typical work week is Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Weekends and overtime during inclement weather events, town emergencies, and on occasion to meet deadlines and attend mandatory meetings. The Assistant Director of Public Works reports to the Director of Public Works and directly supervises 26 employees. There is heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. The position requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions depending on the task. The work environment is sometimes noisy due to the use of operating equipment and the often-close proximity to the roads.
