Responsibilities

The primary purpose of your position is to assist in the administering of medications to residents as ordered by the attending physician, under the direction of the attending physician, the charge nurse and the Director of Nursing. The administration of medications shall be in accordance with established nursing standards, the policies, procedures and practices of this facility, and the requirements of the state.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform administrative requirements, such as completing necessary forms, charts, reports, etc., and submit these as may be required.

  • Follow established policies and procedures for drug control (i.e., locking medication carts, reordering medications, returning unused drugs to pharmacy, signing out controlled drugs, locking medication room door when unattended etc.).

  • Follow established guidelines concerning the storage of drugs and biologicals.

  • Be familiar with the meaning and usage of common medical abbreviations, symbols, and terms relative to the administration of medications as used by the facility, pharmacists, and physicians.

  • Report medication errors as soon as discovered and complete written report according to policy.

  • Ensure that the counting and starting of narcotics meets State and Federal regulations and reports discrepancies to the nurse. Participates in counting of narcotics when needed.

  • Clean and stock medication cart at the end of the shift.

  • Note changes in residents’ normal routine including nutrition, elimination, basic skin changes, ambulation and skin integrity and report to nurse.

  • Communicate with nurse regarding resident’s condition and concerns, physical and emotional status, projected interventions and family interactions.

  • Monitor and document resident’s physical and emotional response during or after medication or procedure as necessary.

  • Accurately measure, record, and report the vital signs of resident.

  • Possess knowledge about techniques and principals involved in procedures and appropriate use of equipment.

  • Plan ahead for procedures by knowing exact location of equipment and supplies.

  • Prepare the resident and family with explanations about the procedure and provide emotional support.

  • Maintain knowledge of current nursing care plan for each resident and inform the nursing assistants of objectives and/or goals, psycho/social needs and physical needs.

  • Utilize care plan in organizing daily activities.

  • Demonstrate the ability to obtain and interpret information and data in terms of resident needs and hand off

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.

  • Must be Certified Nursing Assistant on state registry that has completed a C.N.A. training class.

  • Successful completion of a state approved training program and any necessary examinations.

  • Current BLS certification preferred.
