Job Summary:

Peer I is a substance abuse treatment program for adult men with chronic histories of substance abuse/dependence; many serving some form of a legal sentence with the state of Colorado. The operations department is responsible for the monitoring of clients within the facility as well as while they are in the community for public safety issues. The position observes, monitor, and intervenes in and recording of client activity. The position audits a plethora of standards from the Division or Criminal Justice, Signal Behavior Health, and Office of Behavioral Health.

Peer I and The Haven Outpatient Therapeutic Community (OTC) is the coed outpatient, continuing care component for clients completing The Haven and Peer I residential programs. OTC provides gender specific services to this coed population. OTC is licensed by the Colorado Department of Human Services, Office of Behavioral Health (OBH), and is contracted by the Colorado Division of Criminal Justice as a Community Corrections Non Residential Program. Clients are referred to Peer I and The Haven from the criminal justice system, a direct judicial sentence, Signal Behavioral Health or from a variety of non-criminal justice agencies.

This position exists to provide support services to our client population who are involved in the criminal justice system and recovering from Substance Use Disorders. This is an entry level position but allows for the accumulation of hours needed to eventually secure a Colorado Addictions Counselor Certification (CAC).

Examples of Work Performed:

  • Collection of same sex urinalysis samples

  • Residence checks per DCJ (Division of Criminal Justice) standards

  • Maintenance of several Excel data bases related to client progress

  • Coordinating with our contracted Laboratory to interpret and report urinalysis testing results to the clinical team

  • Entry of client services into the CWISE system (offender data base)

  • Filing paperwork

  • Tracking of client services related to DCJ contact standards

  • Generating monthly progress reports

  • This position will be heavily involved in entering data into our Electronic Health Care Record and the applicant should have above average familiarity with computers and especially Excel spreadsheets

  • Additional miscellaneous duties may be assigned per the program manager.

The position will assist with completing other job functions required to meet Division of Criminal Justice and Department of Corrections Standards. The driving involved in this position would involve driving clients in state cars to activities, appointments or in completing other program related duties.

Salary and Benefits:

The hiring salary for this position is $26,700, however, additional compensation may be granted. This position is eligible for overtime compensation.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must possess a GED or High School Diploma.

  • One year of experience appropriate to the work assignment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Possess a Certified Addiction Counselor I (CAC I) certification, Bachelor’s degree in psychology, counseling, counseling psychology or a related field.

  • Past work experience with clients in recovery

  • Experience working in a substance abuse treatment program with adult clients

  • Experience working with offender population

  • Experience working with Community Corrections/Department of Corrections clientele

  • Experience documenting behavior according to established policies

  • Experience with behavior modification techniques

  • Experience observing, collecting and processing urine samples

  • Experience using an Electronic Medical Record


  • Proficient in Microsoft Office programs and ability to learn software programs

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

  • Excellent written communication skills

  • Ability to manage difficult behaviors

  • Ability to comply with established rules, policies and procedures

  • Ability to develop healthy relationships with clients

  • Ability to establish boundaries with clients

  • Ability to be open-minded and non-judgmental

Conditions of Employment:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid State of Colorado Driver's License

  • Must agree to fingerprinting and criminal background check. Required background checks include a review with the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) AND the Central Registry of Child Protection (Trails).

  • Subject to pre-employment, post-accident or incident or reasonable suspicion drug and alcohol testing per UCD Addiction Research and Treatment Services Department Policies.
