Nature of Work:
The University of Colorado, College of Nursing, is seeking a Bilingual Medical Assistant I for a (1.0 FTE) benefits-eligible position at Sheridan Health Services (SHS), a Federally Qualified Health Center located in southwest Denver, CO (zip code: 80236). These positions will primarily provide quality care to patients at the Family Health Clinic site and may be asked to see patients at the Youth Health Clinic as well. Applicants should be educated and trained as Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT’s), Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs), Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN) or Medical Assistants (MAs).
Clinic Description:
Sheridan Health Services is a multi-site, nurse-managed federally qualified community health center, funded through the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Bureau of Primary Healthcare; and is a collaborative effort between the College of Nursing and the Sheridan School District. There are now 45 employees at two convenient locations to serve community health needs primarily for residents of Arapahoe, Denver and Jefferson counties. A Youth Health Clinic is located in the Sheridan School District Administration building. The Family Health Clinic is located in southwest Denver on the Fort Logan campus and provides services to adults and children, 65% of whom identify at Latinx, and 42% of whom are best served in another language, with Spanish being the predominant second language. Services offered include primary care across the lifespan; prenatal and postpartum, gynecology, dentistry, pharmacy, behavioral health, and outpatient substance abuse treatment. Sheridan Health Services is a Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH), and as such we uphold a model of care that places the patient at the center, incorporating the values and beliefs of the patient in all decision-making. Supervision Received:
Direct supervision will be provided by the Nurse Case Manager.
Supervision Exercised:
No supervision is exercised
Examples of Work Performed:
Upholds strict compliance with University and professional policies/procedures
Follows CDC guidelines for reporting illness and temperature, wearing masks and washing hands and more during flu seasons and pandemics
Works with both Pediatric and Adult populations; flexes between Adult and Pediatric clinics as staffing warrants
Speaks Spanish and English on a daily basis, communicating clinical terminology to patients and colleagues.
Works until 8pm on designated extended hours shifts as needed
Greets patients and families and completes standard patient check-in procedures in person and using Tele-health tools
Measures and documents vital signs; notifies provider of abnormal values
Completes Medication Reconciliation in EHR
Records patient interview, history, and chief complaint in EHR
Prepares patients for examinations and performs standard screening tests
Assists providers with examinations and procedures as needed
Performs phlebotomy, and follows lab procedure for the proper collection and handling of other lab specimens
Performs basic wound care and first aid
Provides patient education with regard to office policies, lab results medications, diagnoses, treatment, plan of care, and follow-up phone calls
Prepares, administers and electronically documents medications within scope (i.e.Depo-Provera) with provider authorization
Administers immunizations, maintains immunizations records and completes annual immunization training within timeline set by supervisor
Assists with clerical and administrative duties proactively and as needed, including covering front desk/reception and answering overflow incoming calls.
Answers phone and schedules appointments, electronically faxes and uploads records, outside reports and orders
Maintains and reports inventory of patient supplies and equipment, requests orders for replacements through Compliance Officer
Assist MA team with inventory-taking, stocking and sterilizing instruments
Calls and electronically faxes prescriptions to the pharmacy for providers. Participates in Prior Authorization attainment, as trained and request
Maintains biannual CPR certification and uses CPR skills, when required
Maintains and disposes of biohazard waste according to OSHA standards
Practices OSHA safety standards
Performs accurate, legal and ethical documentation (electronic/hard-copy) at all times
Assists with reporting test results to state and federal agencies, as appropriate
Communicates with community partners as needed including public health agencies, specialty/outside provider offices, local hospitals and free-standing healthcare facilities
Performs additional miscellaneous job duties as assigned
Salary and Benefits:
The salary range ( or hiring range ) for this position has been established at $35,652 to $37,500.
The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.
The above salary range ( or hiring range ) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
This position is eligible for overtime compensation.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- Graduate from an accredited medical assistant, nursing assistant, licensed practical nurse, and/or emergency medical technician school/program
Substitution: One year of medical assistant, nursing assistant, LPN or EMT experience may substitute for graduation from an accredited program in those fields.
Conditions of Employment:
Must be willing and able to obtain current BLS/CPR certification by date of hire.
Must be willing and able to speak Spanish and English on a daily basis to communicate clinical terminology.
Must be willing and able to remain credentialed and ensure credentialing materials stay current.
Must be willing and able to work until 8pm on designated extended hours shifts as needed
Availability to work weekends on an infrequent, rotating, as-needed basis
Must be willing and able to work in normal patient care environment with some exposure to biological hazards and infectious diseases.
Preferred Qualifications:
One year of experience as a medical assistant.
Experience working with low-income populations within a community health center environment
Prior EHR (electronic health record) experience, this includes student externship
Competencies:
Ability to take direction and utilize considerable degree of independent judgment and work priorities
Exemplary organizational skills and ability to prioritize
Unconditional ability to maintain patient confidentiality
Proficient in using various computer applications, EHR and other tools to communicate with staff and complete appropriate clinical documentation.
Knowledge of current medical procedures and understanding of basic medical terminology
Effective interpersonal skills to work cooperatively with patients, their families, and other members of the health care team
Understands and implements HIPAA and OSHA compliance
Basic knowledge of Colorado state immunization requirements
Ability to work with both Pediatric and Adult populations; able to flex between Adult and Pediatric clinics as staffing warrants
