Westrock Company Sr. Director, Corrugated Global Health & Safety in Atlanta, Georgia

WestRock is seeking a highly talented Global Health and Safety (H/S) Leader that will have responsibility and oversight for health and safety working in a complex global function located in Sandy Springs, GA. This position will report to the Vice President, Safety and be a member of the Safety Leadership team supporting the Corrugated business segment. The Senior Director, Global H/S provides leadership, coaching, and safety technical expertise plus strategic guidance and operations support to all assigned sites. Global H/S lead must be competent in leading high-performing safety teams as well as elevating the performance and skills of high-touch, high-need sites. We are seeking a thought leader that will help to develop WestRock’s approach to 100% SAFE and provide leadership with support as a key business partner for the Corrugated business segment.

HOW YOU WILL IMPACT WESTROCK:

  • Coaching and influencing leadership, at all levels, and team members to affect change in H/S.

  • Leading a team of H/S professionals to drive H/S objectives and targets across the business

  • Developing a sustainable HS management system to effectively drive engagement, identify and reduce risk and provide a safe and healthy work environment.

  • Championing corporate level initiatives driving H&S improvements across a numerous manufacturing locations.

  • Assisting WestRock Corrugated operations with implementing WestRock’s Safety Management System, developing, and implementing effective injury prevention programs and ensuring compliance with company policies, standards and regulatory requirements.

  • Developing strategic H&S performance improvement plans and goals across the Corrugated business segment.

  • Ensuring strategy deployment from the enterprise level to the business and site levels is consistently completed annually and aligns with enterprise-wide targets and objectives.

  • Coaching local and functional leaders on risk analysis, event learning/investigation procedures, root cause analysis, creating and executing corrective counter measures.

  • Participating in Corporate H&S team/council, cascading communications, and process controls to business and local leadership.

  • Developing and implementing regulatory strategies, including the development, communication, implementation, and monitoring of WestRock’s, health and safety program to ensure regulatory compliance.

  • Implementing industry standard metrics systems at all sites including Incident Rate, Severity Rate, proactive metric tracking including management system assessments, analyzing root cause and driving corrective actions in partnership with operations leadership. This will include regular reporting to Senior Leadership.

  • Partnering with Risk Management to manage workers compensation expense and ensure appropriate return to work protocols are followed at each site.

  • Routinely visit facilities to provide safety compliance assistance and coaching and assess compliance with company policies and applicable safety regulations.

  • Assist the V.P. of Health & Safety during merger and acquisition activity and acquisition integration activities.

  • Leads large capital Safety reviews for new product and process development, facility modification, product manufacturing modifications and new equipment/machinery installations.

  • Leads responses to third party requests for information.

WHAT YOU NEED TO SUCCEED:

  • Bachelor of Science, Occupational Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Industrial Engineering, or relevant field

  • 15+ years' experience leading EHS or HS

  • Extensive knowledge and skills implementing or transforming best practices

  • Prior experience in the development/implementation of an HS Management System(s)

  • Interpersonal skills to create a safety culture, influence staff who are balancing project demands and be a safety advocate throughout the company

  • High degree of proficiency in data and statistical analysis

  • Proven verbal and written communication skills across all levels of the organization

  • Knowledgeable in the technical fundamentals of safety management and risk reduction techniques, including machine guarding, ergonomics, and occupational health and wellness

  • Significant knowledge and understanding of OSHA (and other country equivalent agencies) objectives/intentions and local State safety regulations

  • Strong negotiation and problem-solving skills

  • Technical knowledge of manufacturing facilities

  • Strong communication and diplomacy skills are required to guide and influence others.

  • Strong leadership experience managing others with the goal of development and growth.

  • Ability to delegate and ensure communication is aligned at various levels within the business and within the direct H/S team.

  • Strong knowledge and experience with Human and Organization Performance (HOP) as it relates to culture.

  • Experience working with H/S software systems as an aligned approach to safety data management.
