Job Description:

While working at Caterpillar Inc. the successful candidate for this position will function as an “Engineering Technician” at the Building Construction Products Division’s plant in Athens, Georgia. This position will be heavily involved the machining of Small Track-Type Tractors (STTT) and Mini-Hydraulic Excavator (MHE) structures. The machining of these structures is highly automated and utilizes large CNC machine centers with automatic pallet and tool changers. The successful candidate must be highly motivated and proactive in process optimization, highly skilled in CNC machining and program creation/manipulation, and able to recognize and institute tooling/fixture improvements. This position will also be heavily involved in creating and maintaining standard work and in collaborating with the operations and quality teams to determine root cause and corrective action for production and quality issues. The successful candidate must also be a champion of Caterpillar’s safety culture and use Lean principles to drive waste from manufacturing process.

Additional job duties/responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Perform technical analysis of manufacturing processes to support management decisions;

  • Monitor all design and process requirements;

  • Assist manufacturing engineering in the design, build, deployment and maintenance of all tooling, equipment, and programming necessary for the machining of STTT and MHE structures;

  • Assist in the creation and maintenance of routings and work instructions;

  • Improve material flow by optimizing equipment and work area layouts;

  • Perform quality checks on machines, parts and tooling;

  • Validate process cycle times by conducting time studies;

  • Analyze and deploy engineering change notices;

  • Troubleshoot day-to-day process issues, develop solutions, and monitor improvements;

  • Respond to customer issues and lead process improvements;

  • Provide cross shift support as necessary to support production;

  • Provide off shift support as needed;

  • Create and maintain a CNC training program for the operations team.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Must have advanced proficiency (can train others) in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint;

  • Five years of machining experience (w/vertical and horizontal machine centers).

Physical Requirements (with or without reasonable accommodation):

  • Ability to sit/stand for prolonged periods; 

  • Ability to perform repetitive operations;

  • Ability to lift up to 35 lbs.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Diploma or Associates Degree in Machining Technology (or related field);

  • Experience in writing and manipulating CNC programs;

  • Production machining experience with CNC equipment;

  • Ability to modify tooling and speeds/feeds to optimize quality and reduce total cost;

  • Ability to rebuild and correctly setup complex cutting tools and fixtures;

  • The ability to inspect parts using complex gaging and interpret dimensional reports and SPC data;

  • Understanding of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T);

  • Experience in training peers and new employees on machining processes;

  • Experience writing standard work/process instructions;

  • Experience with conducting time studies;

  • Experience with lean manufacturing in an industrial setting;

  • Experience using 3D CAD software for equipment and tooling design (Solid Works or Creo);

  • Experience with 2D AutoCAD to modify plan layouts;

  • Strong communication skills;

  • Good interpersonal skills;

  • Strong analytical skills;

  • Excellent problem identification and solving skills;

  • Ability to work in a team-oriented environment;
