Northwest Community Hospital Emergency Care Tech / Unit Secretary, 32 hrs/wk, days in Arlington Heights, Illinois

Shift: Full time Days, Every other weekend 32 Hrs/week Reporting to the ED Manager, maintains responsibility for assisting and supporting the Emergency Department and Treatment Center Nursing and Medical staff in the delivery of patient care. Under RN supervision, provides direct patient care; performs technical and medical procedures that are not governed by licensure. May assist in directing unit environmental aide to ensure supply availability or perform clerical, stocking, and cleaning functions as required. 1. Provides skillful and compassionate hands on patient care within the guidelines set for required skills and knowledge of Emergency Care Technicians and demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to treat and care for all age groups of patients; implements treatment/care based on the developmental stages of the patient. a) Independently takes and records vital signs, performs CPR, collects urine and stool specimens, performs and records visual acuity checks, instructs patients on crutch walking, positions patients, transports patients, prepares patients for exams, and performs wound cleansing and dressing. b) Under RN supervision applies steri-strips, monitor leads, and oxygen; performs other ortho procedures including application of ace bandages, metal splints, plaster splints, slings, and knee immobilizers; performs oral suction; removes foleys. Retrieves medications, which are not controlled substances, or supplies from the tube system and/or medication/clean utility room under the direction of an RN. May be authorized to access secured medication storage locations to perform job related functions. c) Performs phlebotomy on adult and pediatric patients and processes specimens. d) Performs limited bedside testing, under the supervision of a RN; may perform accu checks, pulse oximetry, and EKG's. Treatment Center technicians also perform spirometry, audiograms, EKG's, and drug testing after completion of competencies. e) Performs orthopedic care as delegated. Applies posterior molds; instructs patients on use of orthopedic devices, applies orthopedic devices under the supervision of RN and physician. f) Performs point of care testing as trained. 2. Assists clinical team with admitting, discharging and transporting patients as delegated. 3. Documents all direct patient care rendered and charges for equipment used. 4. Reports any observed change in patient's condition to an RN or MD in a timely manner. 5. Protects patient's right to privacy; observes principles of privileged communication. 6. Performs clerical functions as required; records and processes information for order entry; answers calls and documents physician calls. Treatment Center Technicians assist with patient registration. 7. Ensures that needed supplies and equipment are available on the unit. 8. May be responsible for care and cleaning of technical equipment including fiber-optic laryngoscope, accu check unit, EKG machines, and pulse oximetry units. May clean patient care areas. 9. Triages communication into the department and refers calls to appropriate staff as indicated. Uses excellent communication skills to manage phone calls. 10. Interacts with patients, families and clinical staff to keep informed and give direction. 11. May perform duties of Observation Assistant as delegated. 12. Adheres to all Northwest Community Hospital policies, procedures and customer service standards. 1. The level of knowledge normally obtained through the completion of four years of high school. 2. Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), certificate of successful completion of an approved Medical Assistant Program, Paramedic, Nursing student with six months of clinical, certified EMT with at least one year of field experience (field experience can be waived for Northwest Community Healthcare employees currently working in a patient care area), and Emergency Department Technicians with at least two years current experience in a comparable institution. 3. Current CPR certification From American Heart Associations. 4. Competencied through NWCH Lab in phlebotomy skills within 2 months of hire; competent in E D Patient Care and EKG skills within one month of hire. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: 1. Requires continuous standing and walking for most of shift. Requires frequent (3-6 times per hour) bending, stooping, squatting, kneeling, and overhead reaching and frequent lifting and carrying of 15 lbs. to 30 lbs. Requires occasional (10-15 times per day) lifting and carrying of 30 lbs. to 70 lbs. and occasional pushing/pulling of up to 300 lbs in wheeled equipment. 2. Flow of work requires concentrated mental, visual, and auditory attention most of the time. Concentrated mental, visual, and auditory attention combined with manual dexterity is required for sustained periods of time. 3. Requires visual acuity adequate to assess patients and read/record patient charts. 4. Requires auditory acuity adequate to converse with patients, take phone orders, and receive directions from physicians and coworkers who are wearing masks. WORKING CONDITIONS: 1. Conditions are acceptable. At least one disagreeable element or hazard is frequently present in the environment, i.e. infectious disease, while several disagreeable elements of hazards are occasionally present.
