Covance Building Maintenance I in Ann Arbor, Michigan

Job Overview:

We are currently looking to hire a Building Maintenance I for our facilities team in Ann Arbor, MI.

Position Overview:

  • Performs routine maintenance for Facilities Management at various locations.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Collects and documents lab wastes including halogenated & non- halogenated solvents, infectious wastes and other products requiring controlled disposal.

  • Operates pathological incinerator, vial crushed and other regulated devices ( based on site)

  • Performs preventive and corrective maintenance tasks.

  • Works with engine-powered equipment and vehicles to perform a variety of maintenance tasks.

  • Assists in performing painting assignments..

  • Assists with carpentry and other light building maintenance tasks.

  • Accurately documents corrective actions in facility monitoring systems as well as on work orders.

  • Interacts professionally with facility staff in planning corrective actions.

  • Procure materials for assignments.

  • Other related duties as assigned.

  • Attend mandatory training as required.

Language Skills Required:

  • Speaking: English

  • Writing/Reading: English

Working Conditions:

  • Must be able to work in animal room environments.

  • Exposure to external temperature and weather extremes on occasion.

  • Must be able to stand and walk for long periods of time.

Special Factors:

  • Must be able to lift and carry 50 lbs.

  • Overtime and weekend work as required.

  • Mandatory immunizations and screening as required.

  • May work with potentially hazardous substances.

  • Climbing ladders and working in confined spaces may be necessary.

  • Exposure to greases, oil, solvents, additives, and live steam may be expected.


  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

  • Basic knowledge and skills in shop and hand tool use, care and maintenance.

  • Ability to obtain Lift Truck Certification.

  • Ability to obtain state license to operate pathological incinerator

  • RCRA training for handling wastes


  • 4 years experience in facilities or maintenance related capacity.

  • Basic computer knowledge.

  • Basic math skills.

  • Ability to accurately read and record information.
