AIX/Linux Engineer

The Technology Infrastructure Engineering and Operations Team engineers and supports all the foundational technology used across M&T Bank. We support two Data Centers, 15,000 Distributed platforms, 24 Mainframe Regions, a secure and reliable Network connecting all the technology across the bank footprint and process approximately 635,000 automated jobs per month. In addition to that foundational technology level, we own the operational support processes, monitoring and command center that provide a unified, well-managed technology response when issues arise. We deliver innovative, and compelling technology solutions, in partnership with our line of business CIOs, to enhance the internal customer experience that enables our business partners to deliver.

Overview:

M&T Bank is seeking an experienced UNIX Engineer to work with an agile team. The AIX/Linux Engineer will provide primary support of our AIX & Linux environments. The position requires a working knowledge of the AIX Operating System and familiarity of the Linux Operating System.

An ideal candidate should have solid technical credentials, good communication skills and the ability to work as part of a team to identify and resolve technical issues. As a Unix Engineer, you will be expected to:

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Identify, develop and implement technical best practices guidelines

  • Advise customers in the deployment of solutions that meets their technical, business and compliance needs

  • Proactively identify trends, perform root cause analysis, problem isolation, and manage adverse events from identification to resolution

  • Interface with customers, vendors, and other technical staff to analyze business and technical requirements

  • Participate in all phases of system development, configuration and architecture. Including performance and availability monitoring, alerting, security and capacity planning

  • Enhance automation using configuration management technologies and scripting languages

  • Work across IT functions and collaborate effectively to deliver complete technical solutions

  • Evaluate and understand complex interrelationships and effects among programs, interfacing applications and platforms.

  • Provide highly analytical consulting and leadership in identifying and implementing new uses of information technologies to assist business units in meeting strategic objectives.

  • Follow and promote use of development standards and procedures.

  • Be able to resolve problems and escalate with vendors and internally as required

Education and Experience Required:

Combined minimum of 6 years’ higher education and/or work experience in systems design, management and/or architecture

  • 5+ years' experience in working with customers in identifying their business and technical requirements, and designing and/or implementing optimal technical solutions for them

  • At least 3 years of practical experience as an AIX/Linux system engineer in a complex multi-platform, multi-protocol environment

  • Experience with IBM Power systems Hardware Management Console

  • Experience with IBM PowerHA SystemMirror

  • Experience with IBM PowerVM

  • Scripting skills and experience in designing and writing automation using languages such as Python, Perl, Java, Bash and PowerShell

  • Understanding of operating systems, application security configurations, and best practices in UNIX and Windows environment is required

  • Ability to analyze business requirements and technical design documents

  • Apply patches and upgrades as required

  • OS hardening compliance and standards

  • Identify areas for automation to reduce operational workload

  • Solid problem-solving skills to assist in issue resolution

  • Solid organizational and time management skills

  • Follow standard ITIL processes (Change Management, Problem Management, etc.)

  • Be detail-oriented

  • Ability to work in a team environment as well as autonomously

  • Ability to multitask for various components of complex projects

  • Ensure high availability and requisite Redundancy / Data Protection methods are in place

  • Provide technical support for internal operational teams

  • Be able to be on call on a rotating bases 7x24, requires after hours and weekend work as needed

Education and Experience Preferred:

  • Experience with automation and creating Ansible playbooks

  • Knowledge of Windows Operating Systems and Active Directory

  • Knowledge of VMware and Storage technologies

  • Ability to communicate effectively with customers, both verbally and in writing

  • Effective presentation skills

  • Technical writing/documentation skills

  • Experience working within complex technical environments

  • Willing to take on new challenges and eager to learn

  • Exceptional customer support

  • Experience managing and/or using Red Hat Satellite a plus

  • Experience with Agile methodologies a plus

  • Experience building services in AWS, Azure, GCP a plus

  • Understanding of Containers and CI/CD pipelines a plus

Basic Function:

The AIX/Linux Engineer is responsible for the support and maintenance of our IBM AIX and Red Hat Linux environments. You will be working with the business to ensure the optimal performance, security and overall health of our AIX/Linux environment. The engineer will also be expected to analyze business requirements and deliver solutions to fulfil those requirements. The AIX/Linux Engineer position is part of the Infrastructure Platform Engineering & Operations team responsible for building robust platforms that drive innovation.
