Our process safety team's mission is to both maintain and improve our state-of-the-art process safety standards, tools, programs, training and work processes and help implement them on a global basis to follow corporate process safety risk criteria and policies.

You will be a senior member of our global engineering organization with key responsibilities and accountabilities including but not limited to:

  • High-level screening of both new and existing complex technologies in all global regions during technology scope definition within business area timing.

  • Be the voice of global engineering process safety. Insist on “doing the right thing” or halting work if necessary, regarding both internal and external organizations, especially during initial business area and technology development.

  • Partner with the Air Products’ Corporate Process Safety Director to identify, communicate, and escalate gaps and risks early.

  • Hold the role of Process Safety Global Functional Owner (GFO) to help identify gaps, resources, and areas for improvement in organizational and global standards, tools, and work processes.

  • Improve, innovate, and broaden our world-class Process Safety.

  • Resolve issues with Business, Technology, and Engineering organizations and seek external resources as needed.

  • Assess risks throughout technology lifecycles: technology supplier selection (as applicable), technology development, product development, pre-FEED, FEED, detailed design, startup, and operations.

  • Work with internal process safety technology leads during the risk assessment process.

  • Assume one or more global lead roles within Air Products’ portfolio of technologies on occasion.

  • Play a key role with our operations organization regarding the full process safety lifecycle of plant ownership and operations.

  • Serve as peer reviewer for new and non-core technology process safety risks and for Quantitative Risk Analyses.

  • Mentor and coach team members.

  • Be the single point of contact for internal engineering functions to maintain safety performance leadership.

  • Possibly represent Air Products on external industry safety agencies and standards committees.

  • Monitor key safety metrics (design near misses, KPIs, and near misses) to recommend and implement improvement programs in product designs and engineering.

  • Follow both internal and industry codes and safe design best practice requirements to achieve corporate risk criteria.

Required Skills and Attributes

  • Significant process safety experience with breadth of knowledge in various technologies and an emphasis on large flammable gas/liquid processing, storage plants, and pipelines for $1b+ capital projects.

  • Demonstrated capability to collaborate with engineering design functions to guide process safety product development and design.

  • Dynamic leadership and managerial success.

  • Ability to provide leadership to a team in developing solutions that both achieve safety risk criteria and meet business and engineering constraints.

  • Proven experience in peer reviewing process safety deliverables, assessments, recommendations, and conclusions performed internally or by contracted outside agencies.

  • Strong familiarity with globally recognized safety codes, industry standards, and best practices regarding process safety design requirements and practices, especially for chemical, petroleum, and flammable processes.

  • Knowledgeable with methodologies and tools including HAZID and hazard reviews, facility siting analysis, risk ranking, LOPA, fault tree analysis, consequence modeling, SIL allocation/assessment/SRS, mechanical integrity, building siting analysis, area classification, in-plant and offsite QRA, management of change, pre-startup safety review, and additional process safety management requirements and methods.

  • Experience working with outside process safety agencies (such as EPCs, owner’s engineers, or process safety consultants) to vet the agency’s knowledge and capabilities to support internal projects.

  • Excellent verbal and written English skills for communication with other Air Products’ regions is a necessity.

  • Experience as functional mentor / coach for process safety personnel.

  • Ability to understand new and complex technologies quickly to diagnose new process safety risks and mitigations in line with business needs

  • Ability to identify complex technical challenges and promote both inherently safer designs and creative, practical, and effective solutions through engaging internal and external (as needed) technical resources to achieve engineering safety and business goals.

  • Ability to challenge new and non-core technologies proposed by internal or external organizations based on high-level process safety risks and partner with Corporate Process Safety for joint resolution.

  • Process Safety leader with the ability to lead change.

  • Willingness to travel to regional engineering offices for direct communication to identify new technology initiatives, technical process safety resource gaps, and assist in regional process safety team resource planning and recruiting of personnel.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Degree in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering required.

  • Minimum of 10+ years’ experience with Process Safety Engineering as a primary role (Process Safety professional).

  • Experience in management of a functional engineering team, preferably Process Safety Engineering

Differentiating Qualifications:

  • Advanced Engineering Degree

  • Minor or advanced degree in Process Safety.

  • 20+ years working in chemical or petroleum industry.

  • Experience in one or more emerging AP Technologies including Ammonia and Methanal production, H2 from Electrolysis, Gasification (all types) and the associated downstream unit operations and Syngas production (SMR, ATR, POX).

  • Preferably has external Process Safety certification (CSP, CCPSC, CFSP, CFSE, or similar)

  • Plant Operations experience or support is a plus
