Sandia National Laboratories R&D Systems Engineer (Early/Mid Career) Limited Term Employee in Albuquerque, New Mexico

:

  • We are seeking a R&D Systems Engineer to assess planned and realized test programs as they pertain to the evaluation of the US nuclear deterrent. Moderate travel to locations such as Amarillo TX, Livermore CA, and Kansas City MO is possible.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team to evaluate the safety, security, and reliability for each stockpile and development weapon system
  • Understand the root cause and analyze the implications of potential defects identified through stockpile evaluation test results as a team
  • Help improve test and evaluation program guidance, processes, metrics, and information management tools, and
  • Develop written technical assessments or position papers

Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a STEM or relevant field plus five years of technical experience; or
  • Bachelor’s Degree and an advanced degree in a relevant field
  • Ability to acquire a Q Clearance
  • Ability to participate as requested in random polygraph testing

Department Description:

Surveillance Assessment Engineers (SAEs) work to assess and inform regarding the integrity of data used for assertions regarding the state of the nuclear weapons stockpile, provide independent views of the effectiveness of the weapons test program over the life cycle, and help ensure appropriate information is available to allow accurate stockpile surety assessments today and into the future. We engage the design, surveillance, and assessment organizations in the planning and implementation of surveillance testing and data analysis, and the evaluation and resolution of stockpile anomalies. We perform analyses and special studies related to assessment requirements and to the performance and effectiveness of the surveillance program throughout the design-to-retirement life cycle of a weapon. SAEs serve as core team members on all Significant Finding Investigations (SFIs), and Weapon Assessment Teams (WATs). The Surveillance Assessment department is a part of the Independent Surety Assessment Group (9410) that provides an independent objective analysis about the surety status of the stockpile to inform decisions of the Sandia nuclear deterrence community and management, which includes annual direct reporting to the Lab Director.

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. This Limited Term Employee (LTE) position is a temporary position for one year term, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to a maximum of seven years.

Individuals in LTE positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.
